Genre Illustrations
Collaborating with the Audible brand team, I art directed a new series of use case & genre illustrations.
Objective:
Develop a versatile set of illustrations to visually represent our most popular and relevant use cases & genres.
Project Overview:
Through a series of experiments on the Discover tab of the app, we introduced genre-specific illustrations to enhance content exploration. With the launch of the new entity-ranking feature, members will see the top six genres tailored to their listening history, with an option to explore all 99 genres via a caret menu.
Design Approach:
Our initial goal was to test how members preferred to browse titles by genre. We explored three visual options:
- Simple flat icons
- Illustrated genres (member-preferred)
- Genre representations through lead ASIN covers
Style Development:
Working closely with illustrator Ricard Jorge, we crafted an Audible-specific illustrative style—clean, inviting, and bold. The first application of this style was a series of 11 use-case illustrations. After the success of these use-case illustrations, coupled with the winning approach from our A/B tests, we expanded this style to create all 99 genre illustrations.
Rollout:
These illustrations have now been seamlessly integrated across both the app and web platforms, enriching the user experience and aiding content discovery.
